GUIDE TO POLITICAL PARTIES
Aksyon Demokratiko
Formed in 1997, Aksyon is essentially the political organization of
Raul Roco, a former congressman and senator, who ran for the presidency
in 1998 but lost. Aksyon’s was a lone-ranger campaign bereft of a
party machine in the traditional sense. In 1998, Aksyon fielded only
Roco and his vice-presidential running mate Irene Santiago. In 2001,
Roco’s brother Sulpico won a House seat representing the second district
of Camarines Sur, making him the lone Aksyon representative in the
12th Congress. Aksyon was mobilized again for Roco’s 2004 bid for
the presidency. In lieu of ward leaders like the other parties, Aksyon
has a network of volunteers, mainly from the youth and the middle
class, which forms Roco’s support base.
