GUIDE TO POLITICAL PARTIES
Kilusang Bagong Lipunan (KBL)

Formed in 1978, the year of the first Marcos-era parliamentary elections, KBL was initially a coalition that allowed former NP and LP members from the pre-martial law era to retain their party identities. The KBL became a political party in 1979 and quickly had the Batasang Pambansa, the Marcos rubberstamp legislature, under its control. It was headed by Marcos, his vision of a “new society” serving as its platform. In its heyday, the KBL’s patronage network was legendary, far outstripping the funds and the largesse that the NP and the LP could dispense in their prime.

In 1986, the KBL mobilized huge crowds for Marcos’s rallies, and bags of money and crates of weapons were distributed to party leaders, who perpetrated the most massive and well-organized election fraud in Philippine history. After Marcos fell, the party was wracked by defections, its source of funds dried up, and only the staunchest loyalists remained. The only KBL party member in the 12th House is Ma. Imelda ‘Imee’ Marcos, daughter of the late strongman.
